York
York is one of the most beautiful cities in Britain and is unique in having evidence of Roman, Saxon and Viking occupation. The medieval character of the city is best seen in the narrow streets popularly know as 'The Shambles'.
Its greatest jewel, however, is the medieval cathedral, the largest in England and some would say the most beautiful.
The city boasts three outstanding museums: - a Viking village; the Castle Museum housing rooms and shops furnished in Jacobean, Georgian and Victorian styles; and the Railway Museum with engines spanning 150 years of railway history.
Day visits to: North York Moors National Park - Skipton market town and castle - atmospheric Whitby fishing port, a very popular destination for northern holiday makers - Leeds Royal Armouries, exhibiting 2,000 years of body armour from Japan, the Orient and Europe.
