The GOLDEN HINDE is a full sized reconstruction of the 16th century warship of
Sir Francis Drake, the most successful privateer of his time and conqueror
of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The ship sailed around the world in 1577-80 and brought immense
wealth and prestige to its captain.
The height below decks was very low but this didn't bother the crew as the average sailor was no taller than 1.64m!
Fighting men, however, had to be at least 1.75m so they were hardly giants.
The current ship was built in 1973 and has sailed over 140,000 miles, including circumnavigation of the world.
